News 20th September 2008
Jack Daly....Congratulations from the Corribee Website
It looks as though Jack has made it back to the start - no news as yet on his web site, but his tracking page shows this:

Pictured below is Jack crossing the Irish Sea a few weeks ago.
Jonny Moore....latest
Many of you will by now have learnt that Jonny has had to call a halt to his UK circumnavigation. I know he thought long and hard before making this decision, so it wasn't a spur of the moment thing. However, in getting as far as Folkestone, Kent he has notched up some incredible achievements, including some arduous sailing around the North Coast of Scotland - Cape Wrath and the Pentland Firth are both difficult passages even in a large well-crewed boat. The weather has been a constant battle, with many legs undertaken in the all-too-brief weather windows and constant delays to progress. This years trip has involved hundreds of hours of preparation over the last 2 or 3 years, including a complete refit of Casulen II, hours of study to complete RYA courses, not to mention a few thousand miles of sailing to hone his skills and prepare the boat. At age 16 he has already sailed more sea-miles than most of us will do in a lifetime, and I have no doubt he will sail many more. Well done on a magnificent achievement.

Jack...
Jack Daly started his UK circumnavigation from Ramsgate on the 21st June. He reached Peterhead on 13th July and has just negotiated the Caledonian Canal. His shore-based support team (Mum!) writes- 'He has seen some beautiful places and met some amazing people on this trip and is enjoying every moment. Please keep looking at the website for updates and photos.'
He and Jonny crossed tracks around Peterhead in North East Scotland before Jack took the Caledonian Canal route. His passage down the west coast, via Port Ellen and Port Rush in N Ireland, involved some changes in passage plans to allow for the weather conditions. He has now rounded Lands End and made it to Plymouth. His aim is to raise as much money as possible for RYA Sailability. Keep up to date with his progress by clicking on the Marine Track link on his website:
For anyone else interested in round-UK voyaging in a small boat, there is an interesting series of videos posted on YouTube by Dylan Winter. Starting in Bembridge Harbour on the Isle of Wight, Dylan has so far made it round to the Thames, documenting his journey with a small video camera. Supplementing the main video episodes are an equally interesting series of vlogs. Go to http://uk.youtube.com/user/KeepTurningLeft for the links to all the episodes.
Latest Jester News:
Roger Taylor is now back in Burnham following his very successful Azores Challenge. He writes:
"
I had a really good voyage to the Azores and back - 21 days there and 16 days back. Mingming was brilliant,as ever. There's one video clip I made that I'm very pleased with - a six and a half minute non-stop take, with commentary, that shows the Corribee revelling in beautiful downwind conditions a couple of hundred miles NW of La Coruna."
Have a look at this video clip - if you are not already a fan of the junk rig you will be truly impressed with the way Mingming handles these blue-water conditions.
Roger's web site www.thesimplesailor.com is, as ever, a mine of information and inspiration and well worth a visit to view all the latest updates.

For sale:

CORRIBEE CLASS sailing yacht No1, the first of her class, mahogany, clinker built, 2 berth, Bermudan rigged, originally built in 1964 near Lough Corrib in Co. Galway to a Robert Tucker Design, totally renovated in 1998 by Lallows of Cowes, main sail and jib as new, Yamaha 5hp outboard, £9,995. Isle of Wight 01983 291997.
The photo is a low-res copy of an original taken by Beken of Cowes in 1999. Their website is well worth a visit - they have a huge archive of photos dating from the 1880's and will perform a search for specific boat images, as well as offering a range of items such as calendars, books and postcards.
Site additions...
The technical section has a few new pages - making and fitting a new mast beam, restoring the Rotostay reefing/furling gear and fitting a Taylors paraffin stove. All this work was done on a mk3 Corribee earlier this year, and is illustrated with photos. Both the mast beam and the Rotostay jobs were, on the face of it, fairly daunting, but in practice turned out to be very worthwhile and not very expensive.
Further Reading...
I have just finished reading "Voyages of a Simple Sailor" by Roger Taylor. More on the 'Further Reading' page - suffice to say that this is a book that deserves a place on your shelf - excellent writing and interesting from the first page to the last.

Site update - Jester News
Jake Kavanagh and Roger Taylor have provided yet more excellent material for the site - many thanks. The updated pages are in the Jester Azores Challenge 2008 section

Pilot whales accompany Roger and Mingming 130 miles west of Ireland
Roger has provided some video clips of his voyage north - the usual internet limitations obviously mean they are not Hollywood screen size but they give an excellent idea of this remarkable adventure. Click here to see the clips.
Jake has put a lot of work into preparing Pod for the Jester Azores Challenge over the last year or two - all of it documented on the Jester pages for our benefit and undoubtedly of interest to any Corribee or Coromandel owner. Click here to go straight to Jake's latest page.
